Pro tip: Bobbins for quilting

When you quilt a medium to large size quilt with with your embroidery machine, wind a bobbin for each column in the quilt.

This will save you a ton of time, and it also helps ensure that you won’t run out of bobbin in the middle of a design. Changing the bobbin in the middle of a design is particularly challenging if you’re using a magnetic hoop — it’s very easy for the top portion of the hoop to slip.

I just quilted a double-size bed quilt. (Side note: it was easy, so, I take back my recommendation that you only quilt up to a twin size quilt with your embroidery machine). Before I started quilting the bed quilt, I wound 14 bobbins to match my top thread. I changed the bobbin at the end of each column.

Side note 2: I also trim the “rabbit ears” on the back of the quilt after each column.  This helps keep the back pretty.

Side note 3: If you have a Brother or Baby Lock, turn off the Jump Stitch trim.  It keeps the knot smaller on the back side of the quilt.
